The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey (ACLU-NJ) has responded to the conditional veto of bill S3507/A4652 by Governor Murphy. The organization expressed gratitude for the decision, emphasizing its importance in safeguarding the right to free expression in the state.
Jim Sullivan, Interim Policy Director at ACLU-NJ, stated: "We are grateful that Governor Murphy heard the calls of residents and advocates and recognized how S3507/A4652 would undermine New Jerseyans’ right to free expression. By conditionally vetoing this bill, we can now work to ensure that no New Jerseyan can be targeted by law enforcement for exercising their First Amendment rights."
Sullivan highlighted ongoing concerns about threats to protest and assembly rights. He called on state lawmakers to protect civil liberties: "Amidst unprecedented attacks on the right to protest and assemble, we’re calling on state lawmakers to protect our most fundamental civil rights and liberties."
He also mentioned a willingness to collaborate with the bill's sponsors: "We look forward to working with the sponsors of this bill to ensure the strongest safeguards for First Amendment expression in New Jersey."
