The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has issued guidance for travelers in anticipation of a potential suspension of NJ TRANSIT rail service starting Friday, May 16. The advisory includes information on alternative transportation options and adjustments to existing services.
At the Midtown Bus Terminal, NJ TRANSIT has implemented a rail service disruption plan that features additional bus services. Private commuter carriers may also adjust their schedules to accommodate more passengers. "As a precaution, some carriers will be moving temporarily to provide space for additional NJ TRANSIT bus arrivals and departures," the Port Authority stated. Passengers are advised to check departure gates carefully, as Trailways departures will move to gates 64-68 on the lower level of the north wing beginning Monday, May 12.
The Lincoln Tunnel's Exclusive Bus Lane may have expanded hours if necessary. The Port Authority warns that crowded conditions are expected during peak hours at the bus terminal due to limited capacity for displaced rail passengers. Extra travel time is recommended.
PATH commuter rail services will maintain normal weekday operations but may increase service if needed to manage crowding. Additional PATH staff will assist with navigation and crowd management.
For those traveling to or from Newark Liberty International Airport, NJ TRANSIT trains will not serve the airport's rail station in case of a suspension. Select Amtrak trains will continue service there, requiring an Amtrak ticket for boarding. AirTrain Newark remains operational for Amtrak passengers.
Travelers are encouraged to use bus lines serving Newark Liberty International Airport, including several NJ TRANSIT routes and Coach USA express service from Manhattan. Drivers should expect delays on airport roadways.
A new travel option provided by the Port Authority includes free shuttle buses between Newark-Penn Station and AirTrain Newark’s P4 station every 20 minutes starting May 16. These shuttles will not operate between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m., aligning with NJ TRANSIT's non-operational hours.
Passengers traveling from Newark-Penn Station should follow signs and staff directions to Raymond Plaza West for shuttle pickup, which travels directly to AirTrain Newark's P4 station for access to all airport terminals.
Returning from Newark Airport involves taking AirTrain Newark to P4 Station, where travelers can find shuttle buses back to Newark-Penn Station by following Port Authority staff directions.
