In Washington, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and its New Jersey chapter have responded to charges filed against Representative LaMonica McIver by the Trump administration. Mike Zamore, national director of policy and government affairs at the ACLU, along with Amol Sinha, executive director of ACLU-NJ, issued a joint statement expressing their concerns.
"The Trump administration’s political charges against Congresswoman McIver is a method more suited for authoritarianism than American democracy," they stated. They emphasized that elected officials should serve the people rather than any specific administration's interests and highlighted their right to oversee expanded immigration detention in New Jersey.
The statement continued by warning of broader implications: "If the Trump administration can target elected officials who oppose its extreme agenda, it can happen to any one of us." The ACLU representatives called for the charges against Rep. McIver to be dropped and urged other members of Congress to join in this demand.
