New Jersey Citizen Action (NJCA) has expressed its support for Representative LaMonica McIver after federal charges were filed against her. Dena Mottola Jaborska, the Executive Director of NJCA, issued a statement condemning the charges and attributing them to political motives.
"The Trump administration's charges against Representative McIver have nothing to do with justice or the rule of law, and everything to do with intimidating and silencing elected officials who speak out against the war on immigrants and people of color," Jaborska stated.
The charges relate to an oversight visit conducted by McIver that became confrontational following the arrest of Mayor Ras Baraka by ICE. Baraka's charges have since been dropped. "Her oversight visit that prompted the charges should have been routine, and only turned confrontational because ICE arrested Mayor Ras Baraka," explained Jaborska.
NJCA commends McIver for her actions during this incident. "McIver was doing her duty, and we applaud her for standing up to injustice and for vulnerable communities. We urge all our elected officials to do the same," concluded Jaborska.
