The Attorney General's Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA) is conducting an investigation into a fatal officer-involved shooting that took place on May 29, 2025, in Woodbridge Township, Middlesex County. The deceased civilian has been identified as Aamir Allen, 35, from Carteret, New Jersey.
Preliminary findings indicate that around 1:00 a.m., officers from the Woodbridge Police Department responded to a domestic dispute call at a residence on East Tappen Street in Port Reading. Mr. Allen reportedly left the residence and walked eastbound along Port Reading Avenue to a convenience store.
During an encounter outside the store with Mr. Allen, who was allegedly holding a baseball bat, Woodbridge Police Sergeant Marco Bruno discharged his service weapon. Mr. Allen sustained injuries and was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick at approximately 1:40 a.m., where he was pronounced dead at 9:21 a.m.
According to N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2), enacted in 2019, the Attorney General’s Office must investigate deaths occurring during encounters with law enforcement officers or while individuals are in custody. Such investigations are required to be presented to a grand jury to assess whether evidence warrants an indictment against involved officers.
The investigation remains active, and no additional details have been released.
