The New Jersey Turnpike Authority has announced a public hearing scheduled for June 18, 2025, regarding the planned improvements to the Newark Bay-Hudson County Extension between Interchanges 14 and 14A. The project involves the reconstruction and modernization of this section of the Turnpike Extension, including replacing the Vincent R. Casciano Bridge over Newark Bay with twin cable-stayed bridges.
Construction is expected to commence in 2026 and continue for approximately ten years. The first bridge is anticipated to be completed and open to traffic by 2031. Project plans are accessible for public review at NBHCE.com or at the Authority's Administrative Offices in Woodbridge, NJ.
The primary goals of the project are to enhance safety and ensure long-term structural integrity on this stretch of the Turnpike Extension, aiming for a minimum service life of 100 years with a goal of reaching 150 years. Additionally, it seeks to improve mobility between Interchanges 14 and 14A by accommodating increasing vehicular demand and enhancing access to nearby communities, businesses, and multimodal facilities.
The public hearing will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Woodrow Wilson School #10 in Bayonne, NJ. An open house will start at 6:00 p.m., followed by a presentation by Authority representatives at 6:30 p.m. Attendees can provide oral and written comments during the event or participate virtually if unable to attend in person. Details on virtual participation will be available at NBHCE.com.
Written comments can also be submitted electronically or via mail before the hearing and up until July 3, 2025. All comments received will become part of the public record, with responses posted online and shared with relevant municipalities and counties.
James D. Carone serves as Executive Director for this initiative.
