On June 5, Governor Murphy and legislative leaders introduced a proposal to offer short-term utility bill relief to New Jersey households. This plan aims to address rising energy prices by using funds from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), Solar Alternative Compliance Payments, and the Clean Energy Fund. The initiative intends to provide financial assistance to all ratepayers, irrespective of their income level. However, this approach involves reallocating resources from long-term climate and clean energy programs.
New Jersey Policy Perspective (NJPP) responded with a statement expressing concerns about the proposal's potential impact on ongoing clean energy efforts. Alex Ambrose, Policy Analyst at NJPP, stated: “We appreciate that the Governor and lawmakers are taking seriously the strain high energy costs place on families, but how we deliver relief matters. Diverting funds from RGGI and the Clean Energy Fund risks weakening the very programs that lower long-term costs, strengthen our grid, and create local jobs."
Ambrose emphasized the importance of maintaining focus on sustainable solutions that do not undermine clean energy progress. "Lawmakers should prioritize targeted, sustainable solutions," Ambrose continued, "like expanding the Whole House Pilot, scaling up Community Solar, and extending the Winter Termination Program to support those who need it most, without compromising our clean energy future.”
