Middlesex County doctor indicted on multiple charges including sexual assault

Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin and the Division of Criminal Justice have announced the indictment of Gurvindra Johal, a Middlesex County doctor, on charges including sexual assault, criminal sexual contact, and tampering with records. The 57-year-old from Colonia, New Jersey faces two counts of second-degree sexual assault, 11 counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact, and one count each for falsifying or tampering with records related to medical care.

The investigation involved prosecutors' offices in Monmouth, Middlesex, and Essex counties. Five incidents reportedly took place in Middlesex County, three in Essex County, and two victims were allegedly assaulted in Monmouth County. The Division of Criminal Justice consolidated these cases for a State grand jury indictment.

Attorney General Platkin stated: “As Attorney General I have focused on supporting victims of violent crimes and ensuring fair and full investigation and prosecution of alleged offenders. Medical patients need to be able to trust that they will be treated with respect, care, and professionalism when they seek treatment. For a doctor to allegedly prey upon patients is something we will not tolerate.”

DCJ Director Theresa Hilton added: “This case illustrates the importance of cooperation with local law enforcement, as we were able to identify a serial offender who violated patients’ trust across county lines. Taking advantage of the doctor-patient relationship for sexual gratification, as is charged in this case, is completely unacceptable and will be met with the full force of our office.”

According to court documents, allegations surfaced from a victim claiming inappropriate touching by Johal at an urgent care facility in Perth Amboy. The investigation uncovered more victims allegedly subjected to similar actions at that location as well as others who reported assaults at facilities in Newark and Freehold Township.

Johal also faces charges for filing a false statement to an insurance carrier during their investigation into claims against him. He allegedly altered medical records post-incident to falsely indicate the presence of a medical assistant during examinations.

If convicted on second-degree charges, Johal could face five to 10 years in state prison with fines up to $150,000. Fourth-degree offenses carry potential sentences up to 18 months in prison and fines up to $10,000.

Deputy Attorney General Kimberly Menafra is leading the prosecution under Bureau Chief Laura Magnone's direction. Attorney General Platkin expressed gratitude towards Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone along with Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago and Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II for their contributions alongside police departments involved.

The indictment's charges are accusations; Johal remains presumed innocent until proven guilty.
