In response to the arraignment of Congresswoman LaMonica McIver in federal court on charges related to a congressional oversight visit at Delaney Hall, an immigration detention center in Newark, the ACLU-NJ has voiced its concerns. ACLU-NJ Executive Director Amol Sinha released a statement addressing the situation.
“The arraignment of Congresswoman McIver is a shameful escalation of the Trump administration’s intimidation campaign against those who refuse to do its bidding," said Sinha. "Rep. McIver has pleaded not guilty, and we are calling for these outrageous and unprecedented charges to be dropped."
Sinha further criticized the actions of the Trump administration, stating that it aims "to silence opposition through fear." He emphasized that "New Jersey will not be intimidated by authoritarianism." The ACLU-NJ urges all members of Congress and state and local officials to use their oversight authority as a check on what they describe as President Trump's abuses of power.
