Starting September 6, 2025, PATH service will be suspended between the Harrison and Journal Square stations for six weekends to allow for the demolition of a Conrail freight rail bridge over PATH tracks. During these service interruptions, PATH will provide free shuttle buses between Harrison and Journal Square, as well as between Newark-Penn Station and Journal Square.
The specific weekends affected are September 6-7, 13-14, 20-21, and October 4-5, 11-12, 25-26. Shuttle buses will operate every 7 to 12 minutes during most hours but will run every 15 to 20 minutes from 3 to 8 a.m. Riders can locate shuttle bus stops by following signage at the impacted stations. Customer service agents and Port Authority police officers will be on hand to assist travelers.
These weekend outages coincide with existing adjustments for New Jersey-bound trains on the 33 St-JSQ via HOB line that began in June to accommodate ongoing rail replacement and track stabilization work near various PATH stations. These infrastructure improvements are part of the Port Authority's $430 million PATH Forward program aimed at rehabilitating and modernizing the century-old commuter railroad.
Launched in spring 2024, PATH Forward is set to continue through fall 2025 when a progress update will be provided after a comprehensive assessment of completed work. Due to the extensive nature of this program, there is currently limited capacity to increase train frequency during off-peak hours and weekends. Updated schedules reflecting these changes are expected in early 2026.
