Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin and the Division of Consumer Affairs announced that an Essex County surgeon, Dr. David A. Greuner, has agreed to a seven-year suspension of his medical license. This decision resolves allegations that his practice in endovascular surgery grossly deviated from the standard of care, causing patients harm such as permanent disfigurement and tissue loss.
Dr. Greuner, who practiced in Roseland and West Caldwell among other locations, had his license temporarily suspended in August 2022 following claims of negligence. Allegations include severe complications experienced by three patients after undergoing catheter embolization procedures performed by Greuner.
The State's case against Dr. Greuner included charges of gross negligence, professional misconduct, and failure to comply with patient record-keeping rules. In a consent order filed on July 11, 2025, he agreed to the suspension terms.
“Public safety demands that surgeons in New Jersey be proficient in diagnosing and treating patients according to accepted standards,” said Attorney General Platkin. “Surgeons who fail this basic requirement present an enormous risk.”
Elizabeth M. Harris, Acting Director of the Division of Consumer Affairs added: “By suspending Dr. Greuner...we are acting to protect the public from further harm.”
Allegations focused on procedures for venous malformations (VMs) which resulted in severe pain and functional loss for patients due to surgical errors by Dr. Greuner.
Under the consent order terms, Dr. Greuner must complete several educational requirements before possible reinstatement limited to general surgery only with monitoring conditions.
If allowed back into practice, additional training would be required for him to perform vascular surgeries again.
Deputy Attorney General Lydwin Nonez represented the State in this matter under Professional Boards Prosecution Section Chief Doreen Hafner’s supervision.
