The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office is investigating a fatal car crash that took place on Sunday, September 28, 2025, in North Bergen. According to initial findings, a North Bergen police officer was driving a marked police vehicle and following a civilian vehicle late Sunday night. At around 11:18 p.m., the civilian vehicle collided with another unrelated civilian vehicle on Tonnelle Avenue between 50th and 51st streets.
Both drivers of the civilian vehicles sustained serious injuries and were later pronounced dead. Authorities have not released their identities at this time.
The Office of Public Integrity and Accountability is leading the investigation into what led up to and occurred during the incident. Officials stated that no further information is available while the investigation continues.
Under a law enacted in 2019 (N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2)), the Attorney General’s Office must investigate any death that happens during an encounter with law enforcement officers acting in their official capacity or when someone dies in custody. The law also requires these investigations to be presented to a grand jury to determine if there is enough evidence for an indictment against any involved officers.
