Overnight lane closures on the George Washington Bridge will continue through mid-October 2025 as part of ongoing maintenance and repair projects. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced that three New York-bound lanes will be closed during overnight hours to allow for work such as removing old toll booth infrastructure, installing steel and fencing, and replacing bridge joints.
The schedule for these closures is shifting between the bridge’s upper and lower levels due to the phased nature of the work and its dependence on weather conditions. The Port Authority has coordinated with local stakeholders regarding the timing and locations of these closures.
The decommissioned toll booth infrastructure at the bridge’s New Jersey entry plaza follows the introduction of an all-electronic tolling system in July 2022. This system uses cameras mounted on gantries over the roadway. The current repairs are part of a larger $2 billion initiative called Restoring the George, which includes 11 projects aimed at rehabilitating nearly every major component of the bridge as it approaches its centennial.
During overnight closure periods, traffic will still be able to cross into New York on whichever level is not undergoing work. The Port Authority advises motorists to check its planned weekly construction page for up-to-date information about closure dates and locations, noting that some activities may change due to weather. Additional travel advisories will be issued if necessary. Drivers, especially those operating trucks, should expect delays during these times and exercise caution when traveling through affected areas.
The weekly schedule for upcoming overnight lane closures is as follows:
- Monday, Oct. 6 through Thursday, Oct. 9: full closure of the lower level
- Friday, Oct. 10 and Saturday, Oct. 11: three lanes closed on the upper level
- Tuesday, Oct. 14 through Saturday, Oct. 18: three lanes closed on the upper level

The Port Authority urges travelers heading into New York during these periods to plan ahead due to expected delays.
