Port Authority advises travelers of service changes due to construction and lane closures

Air travelers and motorists using Port Authority of New York and New Jersey facilities are advised to plan for changes in service and potential delays from October 3 to 9. The agency announced that AirTrain Newark will be suspended between P4 and the train station from Sunday night to Monday morning, and between Terminal A and the train station from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning. Free shuttle buses will be available as alternate transportation during these periods.

Travelers heading to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) should expect detours or closures on parts of the airport’s roadway network due to ongoing construction as part of a $19 billion redevelopment project. The work aims to upgrade JFK with new terminals, local concessions, family-friendly amenities, and improved travel experiences. Motorists and users of for-hire vehicle services are encouraged to plan ahead for possible delays or reroutes. Additional information about travel impacts can be found at Construction.JFKAirport.com.

The Port Authority is advising customers to use mass transit options such as AirTrain JFK, MTA New York City Transit subway or buses, or MTA Long Island Rail Road for airport access. Trains run every 20 minutes from Grand Central Terminal or Penn Station to the AirTrain JFK station at Jamaica.

For those driving, the agency recommends using its free drop-off, pickup, and waiting lot at AirTrain JFK’s Lefferts Boulevard station. Passengers can park or be dropped off there before connecting via an eight-minute AirTrain ride to airport terminals.

Pickups by for-hire vehicles at JFK Terminals 4, 5, and 7 have been relocated. Passengers arriving at Terminal 4 who use Uber, Lyft, or taxis can take a free shuttle bus to Lot 66. Those arriving at Terminals 5 and 7 who use Uber or Lyft can take a free AirTrain ride to the Howard Beach pickup lot.

Lane closures are also planned this week at several crossings including the George Washington Bridge, Holland Tunnel, Lincoln Tunnel, Bayonne Bridge, Goethals Bridge, and Outerbridge Crossing.

A spokesperson stated: "For the dates of Oct. 3 to 9, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey encourages all travelers who use the agency’s facilities to plan ahead and consider additional travel time due to the lane closures or service changes detailed below."

Travelers can check online for up-to-date service changes, traffic updates, or lane closures across Port Authority facilities.
