Grants available to train workers in New Jersey's green economy

Companies, nonprofits, educational institutions, and other organizations can now apply for grants ranging from $250,000 to $1.5 million aimed at developing and implementing workforce training for green economy industries in New Jersey.

A total of $7 million is available, with $2.65 million provided by the Wind Institute for Innovation and Training and $4.35 million from the Governor’s Council on the Green Economy.

Applications for the New Jersey Economic Development Authority’s Green Workforce Training Challenge are due by October 8. Proposed initiatives must focus on at least one of the following industries:

- Offshore Wind

- Other Renewable Energy Technologies

- Green Design & Construction

- Environmental and Green Infrastructure

- Grid Resilience

- Clean Transportation

- Energy Efficiency

Applicants must submit proposals that outline plans to implement an existing program or create a new program that will enable New Jerseyans to access workforce opportunities in green economy industries by providing tangible skills sought by employers.

Program components must include direct workforce training/skill development and, where relevant, support services such as career development, mentorship, and wraparound assistance including transportation fare, childcare, eldercare, and counseling.

Eligible applicants can include community-based organizations, nonprofit or private workforce training organizations, labor unions, technical high schools, county colleges, nonprofit organizations, regional workforce development boards, and for-profit companies.

Applicants must include at least one community-based organization (CBO) that serves one or more state-designated overburdened communities as part of their application. The CBO must either be the applicant or a strategic collaborator with the applicant.
