The NJ Pathways to Career Opportunities initiative is advancing New Jersey's film industry by launching the NJ Film Academy in January 2025. This program, offered through participating community colleges, aims to provide comprehensive workforce training.
The NJ Film Academy has been established under the Center of Workforce Innovation for Film & Television Production. It offers students a chance to earn industry-recognized credentials and degrees, preparing them for careers in film and television production. Participating community colleges will offer training covering various aspects of the industry.
Classes at four county colleges will commence in January 2025: Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, Monmouth County; Mercer County Community College; Camden County College; and Hudson County Community College. Brookdale Community College will serve as the lead institution for this initiative.
This effort ensures that New Jersey has a skilled workforce ready to support the state's growing film sector. The program is expected to attract more production companies and contribute to economic growth, according to a recent announcement by the New Jersey Council of County Colleges (NJCCC). The NJCCC collaborated with NJBIA to launch the NJ Pathways to Career Opportunities initiative in 2022, aligning education with industry demands.
By working together as a network, these colleges aim to streamline their programs and ensure graduates are equipped with up-to-date skills and knowledge. This approach enhances learning experiences while providing a sustainable model for addressing the evolving needs of the film and TV industry.
Led by Diane Raver, the NJ Film Academy will offer three curriculum tracks: Onset Production; Production Office and Accounting; and Hair, Makeup, and Wardrobe. Students can also participate in internships across all tracks for hands-on experience.
