Report reveals student outmigration issues in New Jersey

Building on previous research, a new report highlights the challenges in tracking New Jersey high school graduates who move out of state for higher education or employment. The study identifies gaps in the New Jersey Statewide Data System (NJSDS) that hinder comprehensive monitoring of these students.

The report supplements administrative data from NJSDS with information from the National Student Clearinghouse and AlumniFinder. This approach helps examine postsecondary enrollment outside New Jersey and where graduates eventually relocate. It emphasizes the need for additional data sources to understand migration patterns among high school graduates.

The NJSDS, previously known as the New Jersey Education to Earnings Data System (NJEEDS), serves as the state's centralized platform for public administrative data. By coordinating with various state agencies, NJSDS securely stores interagency data to enhance governance, policymaking, and public initiative performance.

The system aims to assist the public and stakeholders in making informed decisions to improve policies and practices for New Jersey residents. It supports longitudinal research, provides statistical data, and publishes reports on its website.
