Oklahoma home bakers gain new opportunities under revised food sale regulations

For home bakers in Oklahoma, the Homemade Food Freedom Act has opened new avenues for business growth. Doug Eckert, a Mustang resident and passionate baker, found his path to entrepreneurship hindered by state laws that restricted where he could sell his goods and capped his earnings at $20,000. These limitations made it difficult for small-scale bakers to expand their businesses or transition to commercial kitchens.

Americans for Prosperity (AFP) played a pivotal role in advocating for change. In 2020, AFP mobilized its network to support the Homemade Food Freedom Act, which removed the income cap and allowed greater freedom in selling homemade goods. "Thanks to AFP, today bakers in Oklahoma have the freedom to build their business without fear of breaking the law," states an AFP representative.

Doug Eckert's journey into baking was inspired by memories of his grandmother's kitchen. After her passing, he sought to recreate her beloved chocolate chip cookies and share them with others. His business began modestly but quickly reached the state's profit cap, stalling further growth due to prohibitive costs associated with moving into a commercial space.

John Tidwell, AFP Oklahoma State Director, recognized the challenges faced by home bakers like Doug. He collaborated with small business owners across the state to advocate for legislative change. Their efforts culminated in the passage of the Homemade Food Freedom Act in 2021.

The new legislation increased the income cap from $20,000 to $75,000 and expanded sales opportunities for home bakers. This change allows individuals like Doug Eckert to sell products online without needing expensive licenses or permits. The act also serves as a model for other states with similar restrictions on food sales.

The Homemade Food Freedom Act is seen as a significant step forward for small businesses in Oklahoma, providing bakers with more flexibility and potential financial growth.
