New Jersey adds four districts to Main Street revitalization program

The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) has announced the addition of four new communities to the Main Street New Jersey (MSNJ) Program. This initiative supports the revitalization of downtown business districts across the state. The newly designated districts include Princeton in Mercer County, Plainfield in Union County, Millburn in Essex County, and Haddonfield in Camden County. These areas will now have access to technical assistance and training aimed at strengthening their main streets as hubs of community and economic activity.

DCA Commissioner Jacquelyn A. Suárez expressed enthusiasm about the new designations: “We are incredibly excited to announce four new MSNJ Districts and look forward to assisting these communities as part of the MSNJ program.” She highlighted that the program fosters partnerships between local small business owners, entrepreneurs, and communities for reinvestment in historic downtowns.

The MSNJ designation provides communities with technical assistance and training in downtown revitalization and management. Additionally, they can apply for grants for physical improvements, operational support, and strategy development within their districts.

Since its inception in 1989, the MSNJ program has facilitated over $1 billion in public-private investment across designated communities. It has contributed to a net gain of 1,500 new businesses and an increase of 6,680 jobs.

Princeton's inclusion was welcomed by local leaders. Aubrey Haines from Experience Princeton stated: “We are gratified that the Main Street New Jersey program...has recognized the need to support the iconic ‘Main Street’ community.” Councilwoman Michelle Pirone Lambrose emphasized its importance for growth: “This Main Street designation is vital to growth and sustainability.”

In Plainfield, Executive Director Abel Gomez expressed excitement about being recognized as one of the 2024 MSNJ Districts: “This acknowledgment reflects...our community’s efforts...in revitalizing Plainfield.” Mayor Adrian O. Mapp praised local efforts: “Together, we are creating a vibrant space that reflects our city’s rich culture.”

Millburn Township also celebrated its recognition. Mayor Annette Romano said: "I am ecstatic about Millburn Township receiving the 2024 Main Street New Jersey Award." Jackie Benjamin Lieberberg from Explore Millburn-Short Hills added her gratitude for collaborative efforts leading to this achievement.

Haddonfield's designation was described by Mayor Colleen Bianco Bezich as a testament to ongoing growth despite challenges like online shopping trends: "We’ve worked tirelessly...to bring residents together for experiential events." Michael Marciante from Partnership for Haddonfield noted their dynamic downtown environment with over 200 businesses.
