Mari, a mother from San Antonio, faced challenges with the traditional educational system when she discovered her daughter couldn't read in first grade. This revelation prompted Mari to transfer her daughter to a private school, which improved her education but introduced the financial burden of tuition.
Seeking solutions, Mari met Cyndi Dominguez from The LIBRE Initiative and joined over 75 activists at the Texas state capitol to advocate for Education Savings Accounts (ESAs). They aimed to persuade lawmakers who had opposed ESA legislation to support educational freedom for Texas families.
The cost of private schooling is burdensome because parents must pay both taxes for public schools and private tuition. While public schools suit some students, others benefit more from alternative educational options. ESAs allow parents to allocate a portion of public funds for various educational expenses, offering financial flexibility and choice.
The LIBRE Initiative is actively working to pass ESA legislation in Texas, currently the largest "red state" without such a law. Their efforts include rallies, meetings with lawmakers, and grassroots campaigning. With Mari's involvement, Texas could become the 26th state to implement ESA reforms.
LIBRE has contributed to over 60 reforms in 25 states promoting educational freedom. By sharing her story and advocating for change, Mari aims to make ESAs available in Texas, providing families the option to choose suitable education paths for their children.
