University Hospital plans info session for contractors amid major expansion

University Hospital Newark is advancing a $1.8 billion master plan aimed at replacing its outdated facilities. As part of this initiative, the hospital has organized an information session for general contractors, subcontractors, and vendors interested in learning about potential opportunities related to the project.

The session is scheduled for Tuesday, December 10, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the William M. Ashby Community Care & Training Center located at 695 Bergen St., Newark. Pre-registration is required to attend and can be completed online.

University Hospital serves as the principal teaching hospital of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and hosts northern New Jersey’s Level 1 Trauma Center. The need for this project arises from the current building's limitations; it first opened in 1979 and now requires approximately $20 million annually in emergency repairs due to being undersized for today's patient volume.

Ed Jimenez, president and CEO of University Hospital, stated last month that significant expansion on the hospital’s Newark campus will commence by late summer of 2025 and is expected to span about ten years.

The UH Newark Facilities Master Plan has been developed by Genser, a global architecture, design, and planning firm.
