Rutgers-Camden report identifies transportation priorities for Camden County

The Senator Walter Rand Institute for Public Affairs at Rutgers-Camden has released a report addressing transportation priorities in Camden County. The study, funded by a grant from the New Jersey State Policy Lab at Rutgers University, aims to identify community priorities and recommendations regarding transportation gaps in the area.

Camden County is recognized as having the best public transit access among the eight southernmost counties in New Jersey. Despite this, there is still a significant desire within local communities to improve and address existing gaps. The study seeks to provide community-based information that can guide data-driven decision-making.

Researchers used a mixed-methods approach, combining surveys and focus groups to gather both quantitative and qualitative perspectives from residents and commuters. They engaged various community members, including lower-income individuals and families living in transit deserts in eastern Camden County, bus users, drivers, and those using shared ride services.

The findings highlight key priorities such as modes of transportation, reliability, coverage and accessibility of services, conditions and safety of vehicles and pathways, assistance with information access and communications, economic considerations, environmental impact, specific populations' needs, and public opinion about ongoing projects.

Current projects aimed at improving public transportation include renovations to the Walter Rand Transportation Center and the development of the Glassboro-Camden Line. These initiatives are part of broader efforts to enhance public transportation experience and access across Camden County.
