The New Jersey Business & Industry Association (NJBIA) has released its 66th annual Business Outlook Survey, with a focus on staffing and employment data for 2025. The survey, published on December 2, highlights several trends in the state's business environment.
For the second consecutive year, 55% of respondents reported difficulties in finding suitable staff. This marks an improvement from the 70% who faced similar challenges in 2022. Among those struggling to fill positions, 77% cited a lack of candidates or applicants as the primary issue, while 68% noted that candidates often lacked necessary skills or qualifications.
In terms of employment levels, New Jersey businesses experienced a slight decline in hiring during 2024. Approximately 20% of businesses increased their hiring efforts this year, down from 23% in the previous year. An equal percentage of businesses reduced their hiring, resulting in a net-zero change for the year.
Looking ahead to 2025, there is optimism among New Jersey businesses regarding employment growth. Twenty-eight percent anticipate increasing their workforce next year, while only 10% expect to reduce hiring. This results in an +18% net positive outlook for hiring in the coming year. Meanwhile, sixty-two percent plan to maintain their current staffing levels.
