Senate President Nicholas P. Scutari has announced new leadership and committee appointments following the resignation of former state Senator Nellie Pou, who was elected to the U.S. Congress.
Senator Troy Singleton (D-7), Senator Vin Gopal (D-11), and Senator Jim Beach (D-6) have been appointed to new leadership roles within the Senate Democratic Majority. Singleton will take over as Senate Majority Caucus Chair, a position previously held by Pou since 2022. Gopal will serve as Senate Majority Whip, while Beach will become Deputy Majority Whip.
"Senators Singleton, Gopal and Beach are accomplished legislators who have gained the trust and respect of the entire Democratic Caucus," stated Senator Scutari (D-22). "They are proven leaders who will serve with distinction as members of a diverse and talented leadership team."
The committee changes aim to enhance legislative progress on critical issues, according to Scutari. "These changes are based on seniority and our commitment to leveraging the unique strengths of our members," he added.
Senator Gordon Johnson (D-37) is now Chair of the Senate Labor Committee, focusing on workers' rights and job growth. "New Jersey’s workers are the cornerstone of our state’s thriving economy," Johnson noted.
Senator Joseph Lagana (D-38), formerly chairing the Labor Committee, will now lead the Senate Commerce Committee, aiming at economic development and business innovation. "I am honored to assume leadership of the New Jersey Commerce Committee," Lagana said.
Senator Raj Mukherji (D-32) is set to chair the Senate Military and Veterans Affairs Committee, taking over from Senator Johnson. His focus will be supporting service members and veterans in New Jersey.
Singleton also takes on a role as vice chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee. "I am honored to serve as vice chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee," said Singleton.
Senator Renee Burgess (D-28) joins as a member of the Judiciary Committee, filling a vacancy left by Pou's departure. "It is a privilege to serve as a member of the Judiciary Committee," remarked Burgess.
All other committee assignments remain unchanged.
