Assembly Speaker Craig J. Coughlin has announced changes in leadership within the Assembly. Assemblywoman Carol Murphy (D-7) will chair the Assembly Health Committee, and Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson (D-15) will lead the Assembly Education Committee. Both appointments are temporary for the remainder of the legislative session.
Assemblywoman Annette Quijano (D-20), previously Majority Conference Leader, is nominated as Speaker Pro Tempore. This position was vacated by former Assemblyman Benjie Wimberly, who moved to replace former Senator Nellie Pou in the upper house. The assembly members are set to vote on these nominations on January 30th.
In another leadership shift, Assemblywoman Linda S. Carter (D-22) steps into the role of Majority Conference Leader, joining the senior leadership team of the Assembly.
Speaker Coughlin also appointed Assemblywomen Shama Haider (D-37) and Tennille R. McCoy (D-14) as Deputy Conference Leaders.
“Each of the leaders being named today brings expertise, passion and strategic vision to their new roles,” said Speaker Coughlin on Wednesday. “I am grateful for the work they have done and look forward to their further contributions in the Assembly. Together, we will work to advance legislation on issues including affordability, economic security, public safety, and improvements to health and education.”
