Film 'A Complete Unknown' earns multiple Oscar nominations

The New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) has recognized the film "A Complete Unknown" for receiving eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. This Bob Dylan biopic was predominantly filmed in New Jersey and benefited from the Film Tax Credit Program, showcasing the state's burgeoning film industry.

"A Complete Unknown," featuring actors Timothée Chalamet and Elle Fanning, secured nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director at the Oscars. The production spent over $81 million in New Jersey and employed more than 4,700 crew members during its 60-day filming period within the state.

Tim Sullivan, NJEDA Chief Executive Officer, stated: “Under Governor Murphy’s leadership, New Jersey has become one of the top states to film large-scale, Oscar-worthy productions." He highlighted that with the state's tax credit program and diverse locations, New Jersey offers filmmakers significant advantages. Sullivan emphasized that as more productions select New Jersey as a location, it bolsters the economy by creating jobs and supporting local businesses.

Filmed across 17 municipalities in New Jersey, "A Complete Unknown" features notable scenes shot in Hoboken, Jersey City, Paterson, and Cape May. In this production, New Jersey served as a stand-in for various locales such as New York City and Northern California. Locations like Ritz Theatre in Elizabeth doubled as Carnegie Hall while Newark Symphony Hall stood in for a San Francisco venue.

Jon M. Crowley of the New Jersey Motion Picture and Television Commission remarked on New Jersey's versatility for filmmaking: “From bustling city streets to quaint beachside towns,” he said. He noted that attractive tax credit incentives help raise production standards.

In addition to "A Complete Unknown," other films with strong ties to New Jersey have made their mark at the Oscars. Sean Baker's "Anora," Zoe Saldaña's performance in "Emilia Perez," Jesse Eisenberg's screenplay for "A Real Pain," Sebastian Stan's role in "The Apprentice," and Mike Marino's work on "A Different Man" are all noteworthy contributions from individuals connected to the state.

The Film Tax Activity Report indicates that over 190 productions have been drawn to New Jersey recently due to its Film Tax Credit Program offering up to a 35 percent transferable tax credit on qualified expenses along with diversity bonuses.
