The New Jersey Reentry Corporation is preparing to host its annual conference on April 17, focusing on survivors of domestic violence, sexual abuse, and human trafficking. The event will take place at the MacMahon Student Center at St. Peter’s University in Jersey City from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
This free conference offers a platform for advocates, physicians, and survivors to discuss support strategies for women who have experienced trauma. Topics include diversionary criminal justice programming and reentry support aimed at empowering survivors and promoting programmatic and legislative changes.
Discussions will cover access to healthcare, legal assistance, psychological counseling, safe shelter, housing support, safety planning, risk assessment, case management, and employment support.
Michele Siekerka, President & CEO of NJBIA, will participate as a panelist in the afternoon discussion titled “Critical Services for Women Survivors of Violence.” NJBIA will also engage in the morning networking breakfast designed for sponsors and attendees to connect and share resources.
Former Governor Jim McGreevey noted that this event is "the largest reentry conference on the East Coast" with regular attendance exceeding 900 participants including state legislators and advocates.
Rachel Snyder from The New York Times will join a panel discussing self-defense killings. The “Criminal Justice Diversion for Women” panel features federal judges Madeline Cox Arleo and Katharine S. Hayden alongside state lawmakers Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin (D-19), Senate Majority Leader M. Teresa Ruiz (D-29), and Assemblywoman Eliana Pintor Marin (D-29).
Over 50 speakers are expected including Sister Norma Pimentel of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley; Michele Bratcher Goodwin from Georgetown University Law Center; Gloria Bachmann from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School; among other agency leaders.
