NJEA criticizes Trump's executive order on closing Education Department

President Donald Trump has issued an executive order to close the United States Department of Education. This move, seen as controversial and potentially illegal, is part of his administration's effort to implement the Project 2025 agenda. Critics argue that these policies are unpopular and would not pass through Congress due to their impact on American families nationwide.

In response, the leadership of the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA), including President Sean Spiller, Vice President Steve Beatty, and Secretary-Treasurer Petal Robertson, released a statement criticizing Trump's actions. They claim Trump uses executive orders to bypass Congress because his policies lack widespread support.

"Donald Trump has once again chosen to hide behind the bluster of an executive order to advance a deeply unpopular policy," they stated. They suggest Trump's reluctance to present his proposals in Congress indicates weakness within his party.

The NJEA leaders further argue that most American families oppose tax breaks for billionaires like Elon Musk or Linda McMahon. Instead, they want educational opportunities for all children, which they believe have been supported by the Department of Education for decades.

They express skepticism about promises that essential programs like Title I and IDEA will continue after the department's closure. "No one is fooled by the false promise that critical programs like Title I and IDEA will carry on after the destruction of the department," they said.

The statement also addresses concerns about funding cuts from influential figures such as Elon Musk. "When Elon Musk slashes $1 billion from programs that feed hungry students, you can be sure that he does not care at all about their learning."

The NJEA concludes with a call for public resistance against what they see as harmful changes: "We urge everyone who cares about public education to stand strong against this theft of our children’s future."
