Governor Hochul unveils $160 million plan for improved Q70 bus service to LaGuardia

Governor Kathy Hochul, in collaboration with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), has announced a $160 million initiative aimed at enhancing the Q70 LaGuardia Link bus service. This plan is designed to provide faster, more frequent, and more reliable transportation connecting LaGuardia Airport with key transit hubs in Jackson Heights and Woodside.

"The transformation of LaGuardia airport into a world-class destination that is recognized for its excellence is an integral part of our bold vision for a new era in New York, and that starts with much needed enhancements in transportation to and from the airport," Governor Hochul stated. She emphasized that the new funding will facilitate several projects, including the installation of new bus lanes and traffic lights to prioritize buses.

The proposal is set to be reviewed by the Port Authority Board of Commissioners on March 27. It follows extensive cooperation between multiple agencies, including the MTA, PANYNJ, and both city and state departments of transportation. The improvements will feature traffic signals on Roosevelt Ave and Broadway prioritizing the Q70 bus, exclusive bus lanes on parts of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, increased service frequency during peak hours starting June 1, a dedicated pick-up/drop-off area near Terminal C at LaGuardia Airport, as well as wayfinding and lighting enhancements at key transit stations.

An independent panel comprising Mike Brown, Janette Sadik-Khan, and Phillip A. Washington conducted an analysis beginning in late 2021. Their recommendations included significant upgrades to bus services for LaGuardia Airport.

Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton expressed support for the proposal: "This proposal will fund the development of the faster, more reliable mass transit link the expert panel envisioned." Similarly, Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole highlighted ongoing investments: "Across the region, the Port Authority is making historic investments in new airport facilities... But the finest airports deserve equally modern and efficient public transportation connections."
