Memorial Day weekend is a time when many people travel to various destinations, leading to increased traffic on the roads. The New Jersey State Police are urging motorists to prioritize safety as they embark on their journeys. "We urge all motorists to stay alert, avoid distractions, obey speed limits, and never drive under the influence," reads a statement from the police.
Last year during this holiday period, six fatal crashes occurred, with alcohol or drugs being factors in five of them. The police emphasize that such tragedies can be avoided by using taxis, ride-sharing apps like Uber or Lyft, staying with friends or family, or designating a sober driver.
From May 23 to May 27, the New Jersey State Police will enhance traffic enforcement across the state. An additional 170 troopers will focus on aggressive driving, speeding, seatbelt usage, commercial vehicle enforcement, cell phone usage, distracted driving, and DWI. They also highlight the dangers of drowsy driving: "Driving drowsy can mimic the symptoms of driving under the influence."
Motorists are reminded about the Move Over Law which mandates changing lanes or slowing down when approaching emergency vehicles with flashing lights stopped at roadside. This law aims to protect first responders and workers from passing traffic risks.
The New Jersey State Police Marine Bureau will also patrol waterways for boaters under the influence and reckless operation of watercrafts throughout summer. Boat operators' licenses will be checked for compliance.
Colonel Patrick J. Callahan of the New Jersey State Police stated: "As we head into Memorial Day weekend, I urge everyone to make smart decisions and prioritize safety." He added that increased road and waterway traffic raises crash risks but emphasized that choices matter in preventing tragedies.
