Travelers using the facilities of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey from June 6 to 12 are advised to plan ahead due to expected delays caused by construction and lane closures. The agency encourages the use of mass transit as a preferable alternative.
Significant redevelopment is taking place at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), which is undergoing a $19 billion transformation. Travelers using JFK should anticipate potential detours or road closures. To mitigate delays, passengers are advised to use public transportation options such as MTA New York City Transit subways, buses, or the MTA Long Island Rail Road. These services offer connections to the AirTrain JFK station at Jamaica.
The Port Authority recommends motorists utilize its free drop-off, pickup, and waiting lot at Lefferts Boulevard AirTrain JFK station for convenient access to airport terminals via an eight-minute AirTrain ride.
"Customers are strongly advised to use mass transit to and from the airport," stated officials regarding current conditions at JFK.
In addition to airport disruptions, lane closures will occur on major routes including George Washington Bridge, Holland Tunnel, Lincoln Tunnel, Bayonne Bridge, and Goethals Bridge during this period.
Specific lane closure details include:
- Bayonne Bridge: From June 10 through June 12, one southbound right lane will be closed daily from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- On June 12 from 9:30 p.m., the shared-use path will close until 5 a.m. on June 13.
- Also on June 12 from 11 p.m., one southbound left lane and two southbound right lanes will close sequentially until 5 a.m. on June 13.
These changes aim to accommodate ongoing construction efforts aimed at enhancing infrastructure and traveler experience across these key transit points.
