Port Authority advises travelers of major transit changes and lane closures Oct. 10–16

Travelers using Port Authority of New York and New Jersey facilities from October 10 to 16 are being advised to plan ahead and expect delays due to ongoing construction and lane closures at several key transportation hubs. The agency is urging travelers to use mass transit options and allow for extra travel time.

Significant changes will affect access to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) as part of the $19 billion redevelopment project. Starting early Wednesday, motorists accessing Terminals 5 and 7 from the Van Wyck Expressway will need to use a new exit and follow updated roadway signage. Various detours and closures are in place across the airport’s road network to accommodate construction. Passengers using for-hire vehicles at Terminals 4, 5, and 7 should note that pickup locations have been relocated, with shuttle services and updated wayfinding provided.

The Port Authority strongly recommends the use of mass transit options such as AirTrain JFK, MTA subway or buses, and the Long Island Rail Road. A free drop-off, pickup, and waiting lot is available at AirTrain JFK’s Lefferts Boulevard station for motorists connecting to terminals.

At Newark Liberty International Airport and LaGuardia Airport, travelers are also encouraged to use public transportation. At LaGuardia, the Q70 bus LaGuardia Link remains fare-free throughout the year. For those driving to any airport operated by the Port Authority, pre-booking parking is recommended to avoid peak period surcharges and guarantee availability.

PATH train service on the Journal Square-33 St via Hoboken line will operate every 20 minutes from Saturday morning through Sunday night due to rail replacement work. Supplemental service will be available between Hoboken and 33 St every 10 minutes. Planned work between Harrison and Journal Square stations has been cancelled because of expected bad weather. PATH trains will operate on a regular weekday schedule for Columbus Day.

For security screening at airports, travelers should be aware that only REAL ID-compliant state-issued IDs or other acceptable forms of identification are allowed at TSA checkpoints. Those without compliant ID can expect additional screening.

Maintenance activities will also impact AirTrain Newark service between P4 station and Newark Liberty International Airport Train stations overnight from Sunday into Monday; shuttle buses will provide alternate service during this time. Rehabilitation work on Runway 4L-22R continues at Newark Liberty during weeknights and weekends through year-end.

A series of lane closures are scheduled across major crossings including the George Washington Bridge, Holland Tunnel, Lincoln Tunnel, and Goethals Bridge throughout the advisory period. Motorists are urged to follow detour signs and consider alternate routes where possible.

Travelers can access real-time updates about service changes or lane closures at Port Authority facilities online. The agency encourages everyone traveling during this period to stay informed and adjust plans accordingly.
